Walking up to six hours a day to fetch water was a routine for Abeba Hesheni; and the water was never clean! Abeba lived 45 years of her life in May Genet village, Enderta Woreda of Tigray region, some 25 killo meter away from Mekelle. Access to clean water was far from reality as the village is a remote one. More than 50% of the community in Enderta uses water from contaminated sources. 78% of the diseases are caused due to absence of potable water, poor environmental sanitation and lack of personal hygiene.
Eager to end the water challenge for women like Abeba and communities of May Genet, Drop of Water, together with the Relief Society of Tigray (REST) helped support the construction of two hand dug wells. Within three months, the water wells were constructed with the participation of community members.
Today Abeba and other women from her village walk under half an hour to get to the water points. And above all, May Genet village has two water sources that produce safe water for 610 individuals.
The smile on her face was priceless as she attended the inauguration of the two water wells along with other community members. “I am very grateful for the clean water we are provided with. My daughter now does not have to miss school to fetch water.”, says Abeba. She hopes more water points will be built in her area as the need is still very high.
Gebre Medhin’s class was never full. Most of his female students had to miss school many days a week in search of water. He always wished for the day a clean water is accessible to his students and their families. His wish came true when Drop of Water constructed two water wells in March 2013.
“As a teacher, it was always disappointing for me to see female students not attending school as their male peers. Lack of water in this area has significantly affected the educational performance of many girls.”, says Gebre Medhin, a school teacher at Geragdi primary school.
“Our women and girls do not have to suffer any more in search of water. I would like to reaffirm my commitment for similar efforts in the future in any capacity I have.”, adds Gebre Medhin.
Drop of Water is yet to quench the thirst of clean water for many with 17 hand dug wells that are underway.
